Kashmiri Pashmina Shawl is a name that is often touted as one of the most beautiful and luxurious accessories when it comes to the world of fabrics. Pashmina, the word, has been derived from the Persian word ‘Pashm’, which means wool. The wool is obtained from a particular goat, the Chanthangi goat, which is native to the Himalayan regions of India, covering major parts of Kashmir, Ladakh, and some parts of the Tibetan region. There are, however, claims that most of the Pashmina come from the Tibetan region. Still, Kashmiri pashmina is arguably the best of all, with a unique stature in the Indian and the global market. Pashmina shawls were quite popular among some of the kings in the Roman empire. There are few accounts to substantiate this. Another group of researchers believes Syed Mir Ali Hamdani, a Muslim Sufi saint of the 14th century, introduced Pashmina in Kashmir. However, Zain-ul-Abidin, a 15th-century ruler of Kashmir, played a central role in popularising these shawls and was credited with the foundation of the weaving industry in Kashmir. Then, the Mughals gave Pashmina Shawls the final royal touch when they flourished, earning enormous prestige. Since then, the name has only evolved in popularity and esteem.

As the name suggests, this design of Pashmina is native to the Kani Hama region of Kashmir, which is between the Srinagar and Gulmarg region today.
